This course is designed to provide an in-depth review of how electronic medical records are implemented in physicians’ offices and healthcare settings. Over the course of 50 hours, students will review the use of electronic systems in the basics of medical practice.

As an electronic medical records specialist, you may perform some or all of the following tasks:

  • Clinical Information Summary for Reports
  • Perform basic coding to submit reimbursement claims
  • Process release of information (ROI) requests for medical records
  • Review patient records to ensure they are complete and accurate.
  • Collect patient demographic and insurance information.
  • Discuss patient information with physicians and insurance professionals.

The future for electronic health records specialists looks quite promising. Overall, demand for medical records and health information technicians is expected to increase 13% through 2026, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). The agency has stated that approximately 27,800 jobs will be added.
